Meet
Dr. Maya El Hariri
Lead Tutor & Founder
My background is in science. I earned my PhD in Geophysics and spent years solving complex scientific problems. Throughout my career, I also found that I enjoyed teaching, explaining difficult concepts, and helping others work through problems.
When I started tutoring, I quickly realized that knowing the subject was only part of being a good tutor. I worked with bright students who struggled in Math, Calculus, and Physics not because they lacked the ability, but because something wasn’t clicking. Sometimes there was a gap in their foundation. Sometimes they needed a different explanation. And sometimes they understood more than they realized but lacked the confidence to trust their own reasoning.
That changed how I approached tutoring. I started paying close attention to how each student thought, where they got stuck, and what was getting in their way. I learned not to simply give students the answers, but to help them develop the ability to work through problems on their own.
I want students to ask questions, think critically, and challenge ideas that don’t make sense to them. The moment I’m looking for is when a student who has been stuck suddenly says, “Wait, I know how!” and starts working through the problem themselves. That shift, from trying to get the right answer to understanding why and how, is where real learning begins.
Over time, I saw students improve their grades, perform better on exams, and take on greater challenges in Honors and AP courses. But just as important was seeing them become more confident and independent learners.
The goal isn’t simply to help a student get through the next test. It’s to help them understand the material, trust their own thinking, and know how to approach the next challenge.
How The Student Whisperer Got Its Name
A parent once looked at the changes she saw in her child and started calling me The Student Whisperer.
I was flattered at first. But as I heard it again and again, I started to understand why the name resonated. The Student Whisperer captured what I was really trying to do: not just help students understand the material, but help them become more confident, capable, and independent learners.
There is no magic formula for helping a student learn. Sometimes they need a concept explained differently. Sometimes they need to be challenged. Sometimes they need encouragement. And sometimes they need the space to struggle with a problem until they figure it out themselves.
Being a Student Whisperer means knowing what a student needs in that moment. That became the foundation of The Student Whisperer.
